Today I thought I'd show you my new cardigan project. The pattern is Shift of Focus, which is a top-down, double breasted cardigan that is knit in garter stitch, all in one piece, shaped using short rows.
It's the first large project I have made using DK yarn and that means that I need to learn to be patient with myself because it doesn't knit up as quickly as an aran/worsted project.
(ignore the red bits - they're just my markers)

The yarn is Puelo, 100% llama wool which I made my rainbow cowl with. It's so luxurious, as soft as butter and the colours are gorgeous. These blues and greens are dreamy, don't you think?
This is my third top-down project (the others were Shalom and Miette) and each of the patterns has had a different way of increasing. I loved the kfb increases on the Miette which made a pretty seam. The Shift of Focus uses m1l/m1r over a slightly larger amount of stitches, making a wider but almost invisible increase seam with the garter stitch - it's very neat.
Sorry if that's knitting techno-babble but I find the construction of knitting absolutely fascinating. Mystifying... but fascinating!
This week I've mostly been reading course materials. I wrote about how much I'm enjoying Whole Food Kitchen on Monday so I wont repeat myself but I'm also participating in a couple of other online courses that are fantastic but challenging, so there hasn't been much book reading going on this week.
Now all I need to do is restrain myself from casting on any more projects. There's a beautiful new shade of organic cotton in my shop this week - it's calling my name, I'm sure of it, but I'm going to try and finish something before I let myself be tempted by anything new!

What are you knitting and/or reading at the moment?

ReplyDeleteThanks, Karen :o)
DeleteI am making my first 'all in one' cardigan too, from the bottom up! Love the strips in your wool it is lovely.
ReplyDeleteOoh, exciting!

DeleteThe Shift of Focus cardi is a really interesting design! I just cast on my very first cardi. Hoping it will fit when I'm done!

Lovely!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Erin :o)
Deletelove the puelo, fantastic colours!
ReplyDeleteI have the first sleeve of a jumper in dk still on the needles - I started it almost a year ago but only pick it up every 1-2 months!
It's just too tempting to cast on smaller projects like cowls and gloves :)
Thank you, Sally :o)
DeleteI am often lured by smaller projects - they seem to take the edge off a larger one!
you can actually SEE how soft that yarn is in the photo! What a yummy project to be working on!!!
ReplyDeleteOh good! Ever since I started knitting with nice yarns I've been desperately hoping they'll invent touch-o-vision!
DeleteLovely colours, can't wait to see the finished result.

Thank you, San :o)
DeleteWhat an interesting cardigan! Thanks for linking it- it found it's way into my Rav queue. :)
ReplyDeleteIt is an interesting design, isn't it?
DeleteWow on that cardi! Lovely!
ReplyDeleteAnd isn't Whole Food Kitchen great? I did the previous session. Enjoy :)
Thanks, Renee :o)
DeleteI am really enjoying the course so far.
'knitting techno babble' sounds like I'm in the right place. The last pair of socks I made used the m1l/m1r combos to shape the feet so there is a definite left sand right sock, hope it doesn't confuse my nephew?
ReplyDeleteYour cardy is looking lovely and I like the sound of 100% llama.
Enjoy your courses.
Thanks, Mistea :o)
DeleteOh my goodness I love your knitting techno-babble! I found myself getting very excited when I read it...and not in a pattern! Mystifying and satisfying also sounds about right. Short rows...these keep cropping up in my life so I think I may have to try them. Are they hard? A small project first perhaps - I love the calorimetry pattern on Ravelry (even though I don't have long hair anymore). The yarn looks beautiful as always :-)
ReplyDeleteHi Sarah!
DeleteShort rows are not hard at all - if you look at my projects page, those table mats (rainbow and piece of pie etc) all use short rows and are a good way to practice on a small scale.
Love the blues and greens. I'm a sucker for these colours every time.
