Old Favourites

As much as I proclaim to dislike the Summer there are many things about it that bring me joy.  The fruits of Summer are a great example - they make the kitchen an exciting place in which to create things that aren't really possible at other times of the year. As we circle around the seasons some things are so successful that they become family favourites and are greatly anticipated leading up to being made each year.

preparing cherries for clafouti

Last weekend we enjoyed our first cherry clafouti of the season!  I have been writing about this since the first Summer I was blogging here, I think.  I use Martha Stewart's recipe and don't deviate from it at all - unusual for me!
Custardy pudding with delicious cherries that slightly caramelise on the top = heaven on a plate! So easy to make, too.

Cherry clafouti 2012

Yesterday, as I walked around the garden puzzling over what is eating my plants, I noticed that there was a nice amount of rhubarb ready to be picked so I made a batch of another family favourite - rhubarb cordial.  Do you remember the first year I made this where we had a glut of rhubarb and I ended up making four pints of cordial?!  This year I only made a small amount but it will be more than enough to enjoy for our Summer Solstice celebration.

Rhubarb cordial 2012

With the cooler weather this year I feel a bit like I'm cheating but raspberries, strawberries, apricots, blueberries and so much more are in season already, and that's just the fruit!  One good thing about it not being swelteringly hot is that the temperature in the kitchen is baking friendly.  I see some fruity baking in the not too distant future.

What Summer foods do you look forward to?

  1. Rhubarb cordial. You're a genius! Just what I need to use the rhubarb I was given the other day by a friend from her garden!

  2. oh I miss rhubarb! We aren't having a summer this year, well not so far. Northern Italy is under what feels like a permenant blanket of irritated cloud. On the bright side, if this is the way summers are going to be from now on...maybe I will be able to grow rhubarb after all ( :

If I spenf all day at Martha Stewart's site instead of cleaning the house and organising ho e ed stuff, I am going to hold you entirely responsible for tempting me in the first place LOL

    1. The weather is pretty dull here, too, but I confess that I prefer it to sweaty heat.
I hope you managed to tear yourself away from the computer!

  3. This looks so yummy! We have cherries growing not too far, but I've never picked them. Maybe this is the year. Hoping to get to the strawberry fields tomorrow, but maybe before the end of the week. Last year seems that I put too many things off and then it was too late.
