As is my approach to most things, I read up a little bit about it and then went off completely in my own direction. There's something about a recipe, pattern or list of instructions that makes me uncomfortable - I feel I just have to freestyle.
I also didn't begin with using wool/yarn. I found a big bag of thin ribbon in a charity shop just before Christmas and snapped it up. I thought it'd be perfect for constructing a table mat out of and I couldn't have been more right. The texture and weight is delightful and it was lovely and smooth to work with.

This was my first time at trying to crochet in a circle. I made an error at first by going in a spiral rather than circular steps with the centre colour which is why there's a flaw in the first stripe transition. I managed to regain the circular shape in the end, though, and really like how the table mat turned out.

Beautiful! Love the colours :-)
Thanks Sam :o)
That's the first thing you made? Wow. Bows down.
My problem is the opposite to yours. I *have* to have instructions and I have to follow them closely. Just can't seem to break free and freestyle, too afraid of getting it wrong.
Thats really pretty Hannah, great idea to use ribbon instead of wool, it looks like it worked really well. X
Thanks Jax and Kara.
Jax - I think it may be fear of getting it wrong that stops me from following patterns. Also, because I'm such a visual learner I often get baffled by trying to see where the pattern is going before I attempt it.
Oh, what luck! Just popped over, for the first time, to see what was baking, to find ... crochet! I just returned home from the yarn shop with two crochet hooks, determined to give them a go, not a whole hour ago. I'll check back to see how your inaugural run is going -- I'm feeling inspired, already! Thanks.
crochet is perfect for freeform. I may follow a pattern once to see how certain technical things are done and then I go my own way.
hehehe and do you know you can use plastic bags to make "plarn" :-) Great for rug making apparently.
I keep meaning to rip up old clothes etc so I can crochet a ragrug; just haven't got around to it yet.
Wow, weird synchronicity eh Molly?! Looking forward to seeing what you crochet.
Joxy - I have knitting a bag out of plastic bags on my 101 things list but it's rough going with knitting. I may end up crocheting it in the end. I love the word plarn!
A crochet rag rug sounds fab, I definitely want to have a go at that!
a beautiful project!
i too am intrigued by crochet lately, you are further along with your interest! i am inspired more than ever to give it a try : )
I love that!! I really want to learn to crochet - I'm inspired now!!
