101 Things #78 and Other Things

Make a gingerbread house

This week was a perfect time for this project. We read the story of Hansel and Gretel (which got quite a reaction from Cameron about parents leaving their children to fend for themselves, he was outraged) and then made the house using the directions in All Year Round.
I have wanted to make a gingerbread house my whole life but was put off by stories of them collapsing - thankfully ours didn't although I wasn't happy with the way the chimney worked out!

It took us an afternoon to make and chill the dough, make the templates and bake the structural pieces and then another afternoon to decorate it. Cameron had the lovely idea of making the figures to put by the door (they are him and Albert - his imaginary friend) and inside the house there is a Baby Tom one too!
The recipe made a HUGE batch of gingerbread dough. We have loads left which I've frozen to make some snacks another time.

It seems to have been quite a busy week. Last Friday we went to a local home education group which was really busy. Cameron got a bit overexcited with the play fighting with other boys and we ended up going home early as we were both struggling with the noise. There were more new families this week, it's great to see the local HE community growing.

The local bus station has been demolished and is being rebuilt so we have spent some time observing the various bits of machinery. Cameron particularly likes to watch the ones with caterpillar wheels.

On Monday we went to the library and Cameron chose two books which he had finished by lunchtime! In the afternoon Cameron went off with Grandad while I went to my psychology appointment. They had spent the afternoon in Grandad's studio creating some music to accompany Cameron's Boxer Boy comic adventures. He came home with a CD of what they had done. They also came with a large box of kitchen stuff, baking bowls and things and a Harry Potter Mug for Cameron - they are moving house soon (hopefully) and were having a clear out. It's all lovely stuff but I'm starting to feel like we need a bigger house, I'm such a hoarder!

Today we went to the cinema to see The Spiderwick Chronicles for free as part of National Schools Film Week. It was great to get a freebie and have a chance to see a film we hadn't before but it was so noisy with all the school groups there.
We have found a few opportunites for dry walks this week too.

  1. Spotted you commenting on Ruth's blog so thought I'd pop by and say hello.

Sorry for being a blubbering wreck today - we did get in in the end, but only having been told how irresponsible I was for taking a baby in! Hope you both enjoyed the film inspite of the noise :)

  2. Hi Tech
You weren't a blubbering wreck at all and I think I'd be shedding a few tears if I'd forked out that much for travel to be turned away twice!
I'm glad you got in, I've been thinking about it all day as I didn't see anyone we knew on the way out.
