Catching up

It's been over a week since I last blogged, things are moving along very fast here so I'm posting a bit of a catch up. We seem to have been too busy for picture taking this week too so apologies for that!

Last Friday we went for a walk in the woods although the weather had started to cloud over. We popped into a lovely sweet shop on our way home so that Cameron could spend some of his money. The shop keeper in this particular shop not only has the best stock, but is incredibly patient as Cameron and I add up his tally. He ended up buying some gobstoppers which he could barely fit in his mouth and he enjoyed seeing them change colour!

In the afternoon Cameron caught a big spider in his creature peeper and named him Ralph. We spent a bit of time observing him (if it was a male) and read a book I'd saved from my own childhood, called Wolfie, which was perfect for the occasion.
Cameron also did a tiger picture with coloured paper straws.

Saturday was of course monopolised by Doctor Who.

Sunday we had a pretty lazy day. We popped to the park in the morning, watched an Addams Family film in the afternoon and then watched Indiana Jones & the Last Crusade on telly. Cameron absolutely loved Indiana Jones which surprised me as he doesn't usually go for too much violence. The Nazis that were in the film reignited his interest in WW2 which was great.

On Monday we baked banana bread and Cameron spent a lot of time on the Doctor Who website with the new trailer maker which is fantastic - go have a try if you haven't already! We also had a much needed early night after staying up for the film the night before.

On Tuesday Cameron was with Grandad as usual.

Later on we watched Supersizers Go... Wartime, which is on the BBC iplayer until Tues/Weds for anyone who wants to see it. We both really enjoyed the programme and Cameron asked if we could adopt a 1940's rationed diet for a week too.

He made a list of the particular things he wanted to try that included mainly sweet things he saw at the victory party, but also sheep's heart!

On Wednesday we popped to the library (Cameron looked up Indiana Jones things), went to the barbers to get his haircut (always a lively debate in the barbers about home education to keep me on my toes) and then we went up to the park as we had nothing else planned. The park was heaving which was pretty odd for a Wednesday morning - we are used to having it to ourselves. There was a primary school group from Bradford out on a school trip and it was interesting to observe. As soon as Cameron realised there were no children from his old school he jumped straight in and introduced himself and had a lovely time running around with another boy. He patiently stood in line with other children and waited his turn for the roundabout and spoke confidently when asked why he wasn't in school. As I sat and watched them play I got a chance to have my opinions of school confirmed for me. Seeing children literally dragged and forced to shake hands and apologise to one another after fighting and the way some of the children were spoken to was really sad to watch. Of course there were happy kids too, but they were the ones that were conforming and if I'd had any wobbly thoughts about returning Cameron to school that morning then they were all gone by lunchtime!

On Thursday we got an early train to our CAMHS appointment, in the playroom this time which was more daunting than I had expected. The building was lovely, it was the first time we'd visited the centre. Cameron was quite relaxed there - immediately found handcuffs and the toy guns in the room and cuffed me and started shooting everything in sight (not sure how that would be analysed!) and generally flitted about seeing what toys were on offer, not really settling on any one thing. We have arranged for the educational psychologist to visit us at home next time.
After the CAMHS appointment we had a picnic in a nearby castle grounds and then did a tour of the castle/museum. There is a big room full of (real) stuffed animals which we both found fascinating and sad all at the same time. There was a gallery of GCSE artwork from local schools which was interesting. The museum was a lot of little bits of a lot of things - some preserved parts of the castle, some things on rock formations, the taxidermy bit, there was an Egyptian mummy bit, a lot of different parts of local history. We also got to see a transparent working beehive which was great to watch.
In the gift shop we found some replica WW2 items like ration books and government advice leaflets which we ended up buying. I treated Cameron to an ice-cream and we went home via the supermarket to get DWA magazine!

This Friday we got stuck into some gardening, we haven't been as enthusiastic with it this year so we need to pull our socks up! We weeded lots of the pots, thinned out the carrots, planted the courgette, pumpkin, sunflower, strawberry and sweet pea seedlings, some more onion and potato sets and generally tidied up. Typically it was a cold and windy night but everything seems to have survived so far.
